Although much progress has been made in predicting in vivo metabolic drug interactions based on in vitro studies, the quantitative prediction of clinically relevant transporter-and enzyme based drug interactions remains to be a challenge. The more complex metabolic drug interactions such as inductive, mechanism-based and allosteric drug interactions render difficulty for prediction in vivo. This book will further assess the progress made in quantitatively predicting metabolic and transporter-based drug interactions as well as highlight areas where such predictions are poor or not possible.

This work deals with mechanical manufacturing processes in history, examined through the machines associated with those processes. A tool is only included if it is part of a machine tool, with devices made up of moving parts. Once the analytical field has been marked out, the chosen descriptive method is basically graphic.

This historical compendium attempts to give a wide-angle view of historical development without making an in-depth analysis of each of the examples presented. Moreover, this book illustrates the historical development of machines and mechanisms more from a technical point of view rather than a strictly history of science point of view since the authors are mechanical engineers who are interested and motivated to examine the most significant facts in their own area of knowledge of the Theory of Machines and Mechanisms. A full understanding of the historical development of Technology also needs the help of experts in technical matters who can appreciate and reassess bygone achievements in the light of their own technical knowledge. More collaboration between science historians and technical experts is needed, as is currently the case in the field of Industrial Archaeology. Thus, this book is also an attempt to set out a technical approach to the historical development of machines and mechanisms, but without too many technical details that will prevent its understanding being purely historical.

At the beginning of each chapter there is a global reference to the period embraced, the most relevant facts, and the most significant treatises in the context of machine history. Following this introduction each chapter contains a series of sections on the types of machines that are representative of the period analysed together with illustrations to accompany the text. A fairly extensive bibliography enables the reader to make a deeper historical analysis.

Looking back on five volumes of Progress in Low Temperature Physics, it seems worth comparing this latest volume with the earlier ones, and thus draw attention to the trends which emerge. It is immediately evident that chapters in the early books were shorter; then they averaged 20-25 pages, whereas the present average approaches twice this figure. To maintain a reasonable size, it has therefore been necessary to decrease the number of chapters per Volume. Thus, in the rapidly expanding field of Low Temperature Research, succeeding Volumes in this series cover an ever-decreasing fraction of the body of knowledge.

Natural Operations in Differential Geometry

The literature on natural bundles and natural operators in differential geometry, was until now, scattered in the mathematical journal literature. This book is the first monograph on the subject, collecting this material in a unified presentation. The book begins with an introduction to differential geometry stressing naturality and functionality, and the general theory of connections on arbitrary fibered manifolds. The functional approach to classical natural bundles is extended to a large class of geometrically interesting categories. Several methods of finding all natural operators are given and these are identified for many concrete geometric problems. After reduction each problem to a finite order setting, the remaining discussion is based on properties of jet spaces, and the basic structures from the theory of jets are therefore described here too in a self-contained manner. The relations of these geometric problems to corresponding questions in mathematical physics are brought out in several places in the book, and it closes with a very comprehensive bibliography of over 300 items. This book is a timely addition to literature filling the gap that existed here and will be a standard reference on natural operators for the next few years.
